Biography

Oscar Salazar was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, where he began to study at the conservatory of music. Later he went on with his vocational training at the renowned Faculty of Music of the University Veracruzana in the town of Xalapa, Mexico. Within the university, he studied classical guitar program coupled with studies in composition outside the program.

He studied classical guitar with Alvaro Pierri at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where he got a B.A. in classical performance and a master’s degree in film music composition. Subsequent to these studies he concludes an MA in instrumental teaching at the University Laval.

In 1997 he won the first prize in instrumental music, awarded by the education department of Chihuahua State. In 2004, he won the second prize at Guitarra sin fronteras, a nationwide guitar competition. He also won the Cleophas Villegas prize.

In addition to classical music, Oscar Salazar has performed throughout his career in many popular musical styles, such as Mexican and Latin-American traditional music. He has also participated in several recordings of classical and popular music. In these recordings, he recorded in 2009 the classical guitar album De Canaima al Cobre. In solo recital or musical ensemble he has performed at important venues in different cities of Mexico and Canada, among them the Montreal Jazz Festival and the cumbre Tajin festival. In addition to these venues he has also had numerous appearances on radio and television.

Oscar Salazar currently splits his career between the interpretation, composition and music teaching. At the same time he works on his doctorate at the university Laval, where he develops a project in didactic composition for guitar.
